Raoul Y. Roth, Rest in Peace

Boss, Mentor, Friend. Gave me a chance to do my best.

A few of us in section 315 worked on the mission design phase of the program. We created the conic approximation of the actual missions, developed the tables for the Earth Mars, Earth Venus and Earth Moon transfers, the tracking station acquisition programs solving the elliptic integral, and came up with the use of the golden mean as a convergence criteria for the design of the voyager mission. We also developed a method of publication of these tables using the Stromberg Carlson 4020. At the time we accomplished that in 1962 or 1963 I no longer remember computer publication was non existent. We actually had to hand file the frame using the old trial and error technique for the camera to achieve an 81/2 by 11 page.

Those were the days.

The "golden mean".
