Purgatory 18, The Slothful. Canto VII, Fifth Circle, where in the swamp-like water of the river Styx, the wrathful fight each other on the surface, and the sullen or slothful lie gurgling beneath the water.

Acedia is more commonly known as sloth, one of the seven deadly sins as first defined by Gregory the Great. To quote Dorothy Sayers describing the characteristics of the life characterized by this sin:


it is the [one] who believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.
